SCI FI Wire reports that Ridley Scott has reshot parts of Blade Runner for the soon to be released 25th-anniversary "final cut" DVD. New footage includes a reworking of replicant Zhora’s death scene, a slow motion shot where she crashes through plate glass windows. Apparently a stunt double was clearly visible the first time round. I can’t remember seeing a stunt double myself, but I guess they wouldn’t have bothered making the changes otherwise.
The anniversary release will also feature alterations to the final scene with Roy Batty, where a dove is released into a bright blue sky supposedly at night. The scene will now show the dove flying into a night sky, and removes the shot of a building in the background.
Considering how long the anniversary edition has taken to get here, even with all the legal hold ups, I was expecting something more substantial. Maybe it’s all in the DVD extras?
A variety of editions of Blade Runner: The Final Cut will finally be released 18 December 2007.
