Google Phone, Nexus One, annoys Philip K Dick's daughter

googlephoneThe announcement that Google's first phone would be dubbed the Nexus One has apparently annoyed the family of Philip K Dick.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Isa Dick Hackett, daughter of author Philip K. Dick who wrote the novel that inspired the Blade Runner movie, said in an interview that she was “shocked and dismayed” by reports detailing the phone. In Blade Runner, Ridley Scott's science fiction classic, Nexus-6 were human form robots (Androids) hunted by Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). Google's new phone will run on the latest version of  its open source operating system Android 2.1.

Isa Dick Hackett is president of the arm of Dick's estate that handles film adaptations and the licensing of materials. In the New York Times she said that there was “a very obvious connection” to her father's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

The new phone will apparently be half as thin as the iPhone with a bigger 4 inch screen and will feature a 5 megapixel camera, an FM radio, WiFi, a flash, a magnetic compass, and will be sold directly to the public via Google's website.

The New York Times also revealed that Google filed a patent application for Nexus One with the US Patent and Trademark Office.
