Shatner Nimoy Mind Meld reveals lifelong Star Trek friendship

meldshatThe actors behind two of Star Trek's most recognisable characters, Leonard Nimoy as "Spock" and William Shatner as "James T. Kirk", have come together to reveal a life long friendship in a new 75 minute documentary, Mind Meld: Secrets Behind the Voyage of a Lifetime. The original Star Trek television show featuring the two actors ran from 1966 to 1969 and then evolved into a series of highly successful feature films in the 70s and 80s. Nimoy recently reprised his role as Spock in the recent J.J. Abram’s Star Trek feature film series relaunch.

Produced by William Shatner and originally made to promote his website, Mind Meld documents an afternoon's conversation between the two friends while they sit under trees in Nimoy's backyard.

The two actors talk about old times in and out of Star Trek, how Star Trek fame changed their lives, the pressures, challenges, rivalries and conflicts between the original cast and creators, their personal demons (both were addicted to cigarettes and Nimoy to alcohol), along with their marriages and other creative influences. They also discuss the loss of fellow Star Trek actor DeForest Kelley (who played Bones) and their thoughts on mortality.

Footage of the two together at conventions and press conferences has always revealed lively banter and strong camaraderie, so it won't come as a surprise to many that they’re such good friends (take a look at the second YouTube clip below for an example). Perhaps this real life friendship is what makes Spock's death scene in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan so memorable. It’s easily my favourite Star Trek moment.

While it’s unlikely the documentary will appeal to anyone who isn't at least a minor Star Trek fan, for those who are that or more, it looks like a fascinating insight into two actors who have arguably become science fictions most recognisable living icons.

In association with Newvideo, we have two free digital copies of Mind Meld to give away to our US based readers (you’ll need US membership of Apple’s iTunes to win).
