Gerry Anderson, most famous as the mind behind the classic science fiction puppet TV series Thunderbirds, is to have one of his other popular UK SF TV series, UFO, turned into a big budget Hollywood movie.
Not surprisingly, given the title UFO, the show was about alien invaders landing on earth in UFOs. Unlike Thunderbirds though, the 1971 TV show featured live actors rather than puppets. The special effects made use of Anderson's impressive models that worked so effectively in Thunderbirds (well, they were effective for the time anyway!). I imagine the effects will be given a significant upgrade this time round.
SFX magazine reveals that Hollywood producer Robert Evans, producer of Chinatown and Dustin Hoffman's Marathon Man, has united with ITV Global to develop the film, which is being planned as the first in a new science fiction franchise. No director has been chosen but the writers will be Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek. It's too early for a release date either.
The film version of UFO will be set in 2020.
