Spectacular video: magnetic fields made visible

magnetic.jpgTake a look at this spectacular special effects video. While it may look like a science fiction special effects sequence, it's actually a sequence of audio recordings of magnetic fields animated. British filmmakers Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt, part of a film group called Semiconductor, filmed the Magnetic Movie at NASA's Space Sciences Laboratories, UC Berkeley, and used recordings of space scientists describing their discoveries. The movie won them honours as Best Film at Cutting Edge at the British Animation Awards 2008.

Freaky stuff. I'll never think of magnetic fields the same way again. Someone should write a screenplay about magnetism and then talk to these guys about the special effects.
