Clash of the Titans remake to be reshot

Clash of the TitansIt's not often that we hear of a studio reshooting scenes of a forthcoming movie because it likes what it sees, but if we're to believe actor Sam Worthington, that's precisely what is happening with Louis Leterrier's remake of Clash of the Titans. At a screening of his latest blockbuster, Avatar, Worthington revealed to the LA Times that Warner Bros. were apparently so pleased with what they'd seen of Leterrier's work that they had decided to increase the budget. "We're going to be going back and shooting more scenes for it, they cut loose with some money so we can add to it."

Now, reshoots can be demanded for many reasons but never before have I heard of a studio increasing a movie's budget within a few months of its release because it likes what it sees and sure enough, when pressed, Worthington takes a bit of the spin off this announcement. The actor, who seems to have the same likeable if naïve enthusiasm as his character Jake Sully in Avatar, admits that actually "There were some creaky parts but they are the parts that we knew were creaky and that we knew were going to be creaky going into it." With just three months to go until the movie is released, I expect that someone in control of the purse strings is wondering why these creaky bits were shot in the first place if it was known they were going to be creaky.

Not one to focus on the negative however, Worthington quickly adds that "The studio is also letting us add some gods and scenes", which only confirms that there's something lacking in the movie, but also that "they're talking about making the movie a 3D film." I'll confess my ignorance about 3D production here, but wouldn't that involve reshooting the entire movie?

Frankly, this bit of news has dampened my enthusiasm for the movie. It's great that Warners are rectifying perceived problems with it, but I am left  wondering about the competence of Leterrier and his team.

Clash of the Titans is scheduled for release in March (but given this revelation it's anyone's guess about an actual release date).
