don't get me wrong, it's a great action hero movie...but it never elevates itself beyond this genre. i think batman begins did...somewhat. here's an iron man review that's a little friendlier, but echoes similar sentiment: http://eattheblinds.blogspot.com/ - Carl Hungitz

In my defence...

Siobhan, thanks for your comment - couldn't have put it better myself. Tony, if you want to talk perspective, have a gander at the 93% of reviews on RT that don't mention, or barely touch on the politics of the movie. Not much point rehashing the gushing arguments of others here. In fact this review is in part a response to the many uncritical reviews out there. One of the things we try and do at SFFMedia is present a different perspective from the mainstream - and we certainly don't expect everyone to agree with us (I was expecting a reaction like yours). Anyway, I was only scratching the surface when I started on the politics of the movie (the first draft was much longer but I wanted to maintain a sense of perspective!). And if you don't talk about that sort of thing, what else is there worth saying about a movie like Iron Man? After all, it's just a comic book film... Of course, I'm being facetious - more people watch movies like Iron Man than any other and for that reason alone movies like Iron Man warrant our critical attention. If this review generates some debate then I'm happy! So thanks for your contribution, mate! - Gerard

Agreed, we should think about what we watch . . . .but I think we just need to maintain a sense of perspective. If you don't agree just scroll up - over two thirds of this review is devoted to the politics, etc. of what is, after all, a comic book film! - TonyO

Lighten up?

I'm surprised there aren't way more negative comments for this review given as how this movie is so popular! I enjoyed it for what it is but absolutely agree we should think about what we watch, even if it's made just for entertainment. Intentional or not there's always messages in film - they may not even be obvious to the film makers, but isn't that the way ideology works? - and if you watch without thinking you're always at risk of being manipulated. - Siobhan
